A picnic at an emerald mountain lake

Start at Kurpark (with public restrooms) in the charming Bavarian small town of Mittenwald. Walking uphill through the park, you’ll pass life-sized chess and Ludo boards, a Kneipp area, and picturesque picnic spots — including a wooden hut with a covered terrace by a pond. At the park’s upper western corner, a high turnstile gate leads onto a street. Follow the signpost to Lautersee. After about 500 meters, take the trail on your right through the woods. And there it is: Lautersee, with its emerald water framed by Alpine peaks and lush green meadows. Spread out your picnic anywhere along the shore where permitted, or take a swim. If you come empty-handed, there are restaurants right at the lake — open in summer only. The whole area is a hiker’s paradise, with trails ranging from easy strolls to challenging mountain routes.

If the uphill walk isn’t for you, a hiking bus runs from Dekan-Karl-Platz in the town center to the lake from May to October — free with a guest card.
