Innsbruck’s Nordkette, Tyrol, Austria

Not a keen hiker but want to reach the heights? The Nordkette mountain range rises right behind Innsbruck’s old town — and getting up is surprisingly easy. Take the Hungerburgbahn funicular from the city center to Hungerburg (a hillside neighborhood of Innsbruck), or drive up and park there. From Hungerburg, the Seegrubenbahn cable car takes you to the Seegrube at 1,905m. Here you can walk the 2.8km “Path of Perspectives,” a loop designed by Snøhetta with benches and wooden platforms perfect for picnicking and soaking in the panorama. For an even bigger thrill, take another cable car to Hafelekar peak — the most spectacular viewpoint, with the vast Karwendel range stretching out to the north.
