Mount Tsurumi, Beppu, Kyushu


The volcanic Mount Tsurumi on Kyushu island is easily reached by bus from Beppu Station to the Beppu Ropeway at Kōgen Station. Ten minutes in the gondola and a short uphill walk later — past shrines and stone statues of the Seven Lucky Gods along the way — you’re at the 1,375m summit. Viewpoint areas offer plenty of spots to sit and take in panoramic views of Beppu, the bay, and the surrounding mountains. You can pick up snacks at the summit or base station. It’s noticeably cooler up here — perfect for escaping the summer heat or Beppu’s intense sulfur smell down below.
